The Palya Mayi Project, meaning “good food” in the local language, has been empowering the Kimberley community of Bidyadanga to make healthier food choices since 2016.
This year, Cancer Council WA and Boab Health received a Healthway grant to run an exciting new initiative: the Palya Mayi Families Project. This project includes engaging cooking workshops and nutrition education sessions for the community.
As part of these workshops, the team has developed a collection of nutritious recipes that you can easily prepare at home.
The recipes are designed to:
- Be delicious
- Use fresh, frozen or canned ingredients
- Be low in saturated fat and salt
- Include plenty of vegetables and fiber
- Be flexible, allowing you to use what you have on hand
- Scale up to feed a crowd

Low on effort and big on flavour! This chicken rice with five spice is very nice.
Five ingredients make a simple, on-the-go and delicious brekkie option.

Fritters
A great way to use up the odds and ends in the vegie drawer! These fritters also freeze well and are perfect for any time of day.
Check out the LiveLighter website for some more Palya Mayi Families Project recipes. We hope you enjoy cooking these as much as we have!
Many thanks to the Bidyadanga Community, the Early Years Partnership (EYP) team, Bidyadanga Aboriginal Community La Grange Inc (BACLG) and the Bidyadanga Clinic for their valuable feedback and contributions to these recipes.
