Congratulations to world leading mesothelioma clinical researcher and Cancer Council WA Board member, Professor Anna Nowak, for being awarded the most prestigious international prize for mesothelioma research in the world – the Wagner Medal.

We are so thrilled that Professor Nowak has won the Wagner Medal for her extraordinary contribution into mesothelioma research and that thanks to community donations, we have been able to support this vital research.

“We congratulate Professor Nowak on this remarkable achievement,” our CEO, Ashley Reid said.

“Professor Nowak is a world leading clinical researcher in mesothelioma who has initiated and led multiple clinical trials, allowing WA mesothelioma patients access to cutting-edge experimental treatments.

Since 2012, Cancer Council WA has contributed more than $400,000 to support Professor Nowak’s research which combines detailed laboratory knowledge with outstanding clinical trials experience to improve both cancer research and patient outcomes.

In 2018, Professor Nowak was named Cancer Council WA’s Cancer Researcher of the Year and in March 2020, she joined Cancer Council WA’s Board of Directors.

Mr Reid said Professor Nowak’s international recognition for cancer research has put WA cancer research on the global map.

“Our competitive research program aims to retain world-class researchers like Professor Nowak here in WA, by supporting them at every step of their career,” he said.

Not only are our researchers vital to our fight against the disease, they are also the key to inspiring future generations to take up careers in cancer research, safeguarding our local research sector.

“Professor Nowak has a strong commitment to mentoring the next generation of cancer researchers and doctors and is dedicated to service and advocacy within the broader healthcare community, and for that we are truly thankful.”
